Holy basil, also known in some circles as tulsi (you will learn why in a moment), is gaining in popularity as a base for herbal therapeutic teas, and as a healing supplement. Although it has become prominent on health store shelves in North America only in recent years, it has been used in India for thousands of years and is considered a highly sacred plant. In fact, the name “Holy Basil” stems from the distinctive significance that the plant holds within Hindu culture. In Hinduism, this divine herb is employed during ceremonies of worship. It is revered as a manifestation on earth of the goddess Tulsi, who was one of Vishnu’s most dedicated worshipers. That’s why in ritualistic Hindu ceremonies honoring Vishnu, its leaves were offered.
The holy basil plant, or, by its scientific name, Ocimum sanctum, has been confirmed to have potent anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Research in this area is scarce when compared with other herbs, and further research studies are needed to know the riches of what this plant can accomplish. However, so far this valuable herb has demonstrated great promise when it comes to digestive complaints, bronchitis, common colds, stress relief, and blood sugar stabilization.
Wound Healing and Infection Prevention
Are you out of antiseptic, but have a holy basil preparation on hand? It has been reported that it helps injured areas of the body with wound recovery. This benefit is thought to be due to its natural antibacterial properties.
Lowers Blood Sugar
Preliminary research into the effect of diabetics taking holy basil indicates that the plant can contribute to the decreasing of blood sugar levels. For those who are managing diabetes and are finding success with using this herb, medication may need to be adjusted so that blood sugar does not plummet too low.
Aids the Digestive System
Holy basil has been shown to reduce stomach acid and help the body to produce more of the protective mucus that lines the intestines. The result is lower instances of ulcers, and healing potential for anyone suffering from leaky gut.
Natural Anti-Inflammatory
Chronic inflammation has been tied to a whole host of health conditions, including arthritis, auto-immune disease, digestive disorders, allergies, cancer, and neurological conditions. Tulsi acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent, and supplementation may provide relief for those living with persistent inflammation.
Stress Relief
Perhaps the most well-known use for holy basil is combating the stress response. Holy Basil is an adaptogen, and it, therefore, helps boost the body’s ability to function correctly during times of emotional and physical stress. Unchecked stress can quickly lead to all sorts of different symptoms, including those of the digestive, immune, and nervous systems. Studies have shown that supplementing with tulsi lowers the level of stress hormones that your body produces, particularly the stress hormone corticosterone, resulting in an increased feeling of wellbeing and improved mental clarity. One particular aromatic compound, known as Eugenol, is linked to enhanced mental clarity and stress relief. The aroma of holy basil, often used as an essential oil, is also said to provide stress relief and a feeling of calm.
How to Take Holy Basil
When looking for the perfect holy basil preparation, experts suggest obtaining a preparation that utilized multiple methods for extracting the botanical compounds. This process assures maximum concentration of essential components, and therefore maximum therapeutic benefit. Methods commonly used for extraction include distillation extracts, alcohol extracts, and supercritical extracts. Capsules and tinctures are both available for those needing a stronger dose, but some enjoy simply savoring a warm cup of holy basil tea a few times a day.
