GOJI BERRIES – ONE OF THE TOP SUPERFOODS

Goji berries, also known as Wolfberries, Matrimony Vine or Desert Thorns, have become widely popular nowadays. They are used in various snack bars, juices or you can buy them dried. Originally grown in Asia for estimated 5,000 years, they were brought to North America by migrating tribes. Thanks to their remarkable adaptability, they are easy to grow in almost any climate. Even though they are not recommended for treating any kind of illness,  they may help the body to regenerate by providing extraordinary nutrient content.

→ Adaptogen

Goji berries are considered an adaptogen which means they can help the body to deal more easily with stress by supporting the adrenal glands. In Chinese medicine, they are recognized to harmonize both adrenals and kidneys which results in increased stamina, strength and longevity.

 

→ Longevity

As we age our bodies produce less and less of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) which leads to physical deterioration. There is evidence that goji berries contain high levels of sesquiterpenoids which stimulate the pituitary and pineal hands resulting in increased production of HGH. Goji berries are also rich in two amino acids, L-glutamine and L-arginine, both of which boost growth hormone levels. The famous Li Qing Yuen who is said to have lived to the age of 252 years consumed goji berry soup every day as part of his healthy diet.

Goji berries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants that protect our DNA from free radical damage. They contain more beta-carotene than carrots and two to four times the amount of antioxidants found in blueberries. Goji berries are able to combat oxidized cholesterol, a key factor in heart disease. Chinese research shows that goji berries can increase the production of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme that prevents cholesterol from oxidizing and sticking to artery walls.

Eating an ounce or two of goji berries a day will provide enough phospholipids, the main lipid component of all cell membranes, to maintain a silky smooth, clear complexion. Studies have also shown that goji berries can induce apoptosis in certain types of skin cancer cells. They can also provide additional photoprotection for people who are susceptible to skin disorders.

 

 

→ Protein

Goji berries are a good vegan source of protein. They contain 19 different amino acids and all 8 essential amino acids. One tablespoon provides 1 gram of protein.
