Today, over 80 countries (including Mexico, Ghana, India, Ivory Coast, and Fuji) grow more than 150 varieties of coconuts. The number one producer of coconuts in the world is the Philippines, with over 16 billion coconuts harvested each year.
Coconut trees start producing fruit five years after they are planted. But it takes five more years for the tree to reach its full potential and yield around 50 coconuts per year.
METHODS OF EXTRACTION:
- cold pressed
- aqueous processing
- centrifuge
- expeller method
All of these various methods produce a healthy oil, however, the centrifuge and expeller methods may use high temperatures during processing which can damage some of the delicate nutrients in the oil.
MOST SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS:
- analgesic: Coconut oil has been found to help with joint and muscle pain, as well as bursitis, and tendinitis.
- antibacterial: It has been shown to be effective against various bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes), and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
- anticancer: A study shows that certain compounds in coconut oil have anticancer efficacy and may be used for the treatment of cancer, especially liver and oral cancer.
- antifungal: It can be used as a natural treatment for yeast infections and candida as well as athlete’s foot and jock itch all of which are caused by fungus.
- thyroid stimulation: A high amount of (healthy) saturated fat, lauric acid, and medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil makes it a highly useful source of energy for the body, and its specific fat balance may be beneficial for hypothyroidism. In the case of hyperthyroidism consuming coconut oil is not advised as it can increase the already high metabolism. If you suffer from any thyroid imbalances, consult your physician before introducing coconut oil into your diet.

FAT THAT MAKES YOU SKINNY?
Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are a type of saturated fat that is metabolized differently than other types of fat. MCTs are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy, instead of being stored as fat. This makes coconut oil an excellent choice for those who are trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
Coconut oil is an excellent choice for oil pulling because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.
