We are in an age when the mind-body connection is being increasingly explored. Often looked at as a negative, the “placebo effect” can be a positive force in your life; it is the power of your mind over your body.
Positive thinking accrues many benefits for your health: more happiness, less stress, and a boost to your immune system. In concert with other treatments and cures, positive thinking moves the status of your health toward healing.
How Do I Project More Positivity?
In our busy lives and our chaotic world, it can be easy to feel depressed. The sugary, fatty foods we eat and work/life demands that run down our sleeping schedules don’t help the problem. It’s no wonder that so many of us are sick, tired, and overall unhappy. Many turn to drugs like alcohol, sugar, and tobacco for relief. However, this kind of relief is short-lived. The worst thing you can do when feeling sick and tired is to take actions that run you down even further.
Even if you are not able to make other lifestyle changes, positive thinking is something you can do. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you represent–there are several easy actions that can improve your positivity and help you to heal better from any ailment.
Smile More
This one might be obvious. If you act happy, your body will start to believe it. Smiling more leads to relaxation, decreased stress, and more positive relationships. If you need to, set a reminder on your phone a few times a day to remember to smile just a little more.
Keep The Chatter To A Minimum
Social media and screens distract our attention from what matters the most: the present moment. Many have found that reducing the amount of time they spend on social media has helped them feel more positive about their life and circumstances. Constantly comparing yourself to other people’s projected version of themselves is a sure-fire way to forget about gratitude.
Reframing: The Power Of Silver Linings
We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control our long-term reactions to it. When someone slights you, you become angry, or you receive disappointing news, recognize how you are feeling. Over time, you may be able to pivot your stance on the issue. This doesn’t mean giving up your position or becoming unrealistic, but it does entail increasing your ability to think creatively. What is another way to look at a negative situation? Often, there is a lesson to be learned.
Breathe
Our hearts beat and our lungs breathe throughout our lives, but how often do we stop to recognize the beautiful processes our bodies undertake even when we are sleeping? Stopping to recognize your breath is a kind of meditation as well as a gratitude practice. How amazing is it that you are purely existing: living and breathing with a beating heart! No matter what you are facing, gratitude leads to positive thinking.
What Effect Does Positive Thinking Have On My Health?
Choosing to live each day with positivity and gratitude reduces the amount of wear and stress on our bodies. It also helps us avoid unhealthy activity, addictions, and other forms of temporary escape.
When you are experiencing an ailment–no matter what kind of treatment you choose to undergo–positive thinking can enhance the benefits of that treatment. Another beautiful aspect of positive thinking is that no one has control over this but you. Though many people experience depression that cannot be avoided through positive thinking alone, a positive gratitude practice is something that any person can try.
