The ancient practice of acupuncture is firmly established as a healing and wellness therapy. It works on the theory that by inserting needles at specific points of the body, natural energy pathways can be harnessed or diverted to promote healing and balance.
However, not as many people know about the closely related therapy known as acupressure. Based on the same concept but using non-invasive compression rather than needles, it’s a practice that’s been used for thousands of years in ancient medicine but has only recently started to gain popularity outside its traditional areas.
While experienced acupressure practitioners can be consulted for specific ailments or treatments, you can apply the same principles on a much simpler scale by using a therapeutic tool known as an acupressure mat.
WHAT IS AN ACUPRESSURE MAT?
An acupressure mat is similar to a regular yoga or exercise mat but is covered in small spikes or nodules that are designed to increase blood flow, therefore stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. The idea might sound uncomfortable, but the spikes are typically made of soft plastic or foam and can be arranged in various densities and patterns to avoid the more extreme levels of stimulation.
An acupressure mat often includes a neck and headrest for extra support, which can also be covered in spikes to increase the area of stimulation.

– For some people, the spikes cause too much discomfort to make the therapy worthwhile. A mild aching sensation is normal during the first session or two, and while most people quickly get used to it, others may find they never get over that initial unpleasant feeling.
– People with sensitive skin may find that extended use can cause irritation, rashes, and other reactions. However, starting slowly and then gradually increasing the amount of time you spend on the mat can usually avoid this problem.
– People with circulation disorders, diabetes, or severe back complaints should consult their doctor before using an acupressure mat.
FIVE SITUATIONS WHERE AN ACUPRESSURE MAT COULD HELP
People have used acupressure mats for all kinds of healing and well-being purposes, but there are five main situations where they’re thought to provide the most benefit.

By increasing blood flow and reducing muscle tension, acupressure mats can help with many forms of chronic pain, particularly back pain, neck pain, and other forms of joint pain. At a more general level, an acupressure mat can also relieve the general soreness and stiffness of tiring daily life.
2) Fitness and Recovery
Using an acupressure mat after a workout may help speed up recovery, reducing muscle stiffness and soreness while encouraging healing. Some people find using a mat before a workout is an effective first step in a warm-up routine, helping to increase stamina and ward off injury.
3) Stress Relief
An acupressure mat can reduce muscle tension in the upper body while also promoting the release of endorphins. Both of these effects can provide relief from everyday stress and anxiety.
4) Improved Sleep
Similarly, reducing muscle tension while promoting relaxation can help to improve poor sleep. Using a mat shortly before bed can help many people drift off more quickly and enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep.
5) Improved Digestion
Lastly, some people report that by improving blood flow in the lower body, an acupressure mat can relieve digestive issues, including bloating, constipation, and even irritable bowel syndrome.
